When PFW opened its doors in 1964, Kettler Hall was the first and only building on the campus. The 52-year-old building required a much-needed renovation to its first-floor lobby and West wing. Admissions, financial offices and student advising are presently housed in the hall.

Current layouts lacked cohesiveness and were underutilized. Focus on ‘student success’ was PFW’s core goal. 15,000 square feet of space was reconfigured to allow greater student access and enhance circulation as well as establish a centralized student waiting area. The new central hub provides a hang-out space where students can collaborate and recharge. Designed as a technology rich space, a wide variety of seating configurations supports the needs of contemporary student life.

Fresh finishes and architectural elements bring energy and interest to the project while referencing PFW’s brand and culture.

More than a decade had passed since our studio was considered for a remodel of the Johnson Board Room in Butler University’s Robertson Hall. At the time a hand blocked wallpaper from the 1800s depicting Butler’s architectural heritage was to be replicated. The project was never realized; however, in 2011 the idea was resurrected.

Seven of the university’s most iconic buildings were selected for the considerable mural executed by local artists, Blice Edwards. A palette of more than 40 colors were used to craft the immense art work which extends to the 22-foot ceiling.

Also incorporated into the project scope were a host of other improvements aside from the mural. Appropriately detailed millwork framing a prominent entry, buffets with black granite tops, the camouflage of return air-grilles and sound absorption blankets were just a few of the enhancements.

Stately but simple floor to ceiling velvet curtains were installed to enrich the room and provide an elongated design element. Fresh traditional carpet tiles and new large-scale pendants replaced out of date floor finishes and lighting respectively. Upgrading technology was important during the remodel, adding two media spaces to the Johnson Board Room to house upgraded systems.

Rowland Designed was engaged to design multiple spaces within Purdue University’s Harrison Hall.  A former dining hall space was repurposed to a new student study and activity room. The university desired to pay homage to President William Henry Harrison for whom the hall is named. Custom art work was created that highlights pop-art portraits of leading American presidents. The reimagined space features vibrant colors and applications of bold stripes. The space is used primarily for games, study, television viewing and large student led meetings.

The lower level study lounge is a social hub catering to student study groups.  A blend of various seating including lounge, booth as well as a mix of tables and chairs offer students selections that best suit their study needs.  Much of the seating is on casters allowing for greater flexibility. Energetic colors were also used in the remodel in addition to dynamic carpet patterns.

Rowland Design converted a little-used formal lounge at the heart of Wabash’s campus into a restaurant and pub that provides an improved gathering space available to all students and faculty to foster community interaction.

The intent for this renovation was to use a minimal budget for maximum impact. Wall-to-wall carpeting was removed to expose the original hardwood floor which was lightly refinished. The ceiling was dropped to allow new lighting, wifi and ceiling fans, and was surfaced with prefinished wood flooring. A bar, complete with a solid wood top, was created at one end of the space and surrounded by handmade walnut stools created by a faculty member. A variety of seating/study options were created inside the space with elevated booths, a community table, lounge area and 4-top tables.

Historic photos and powerful quotes that are important to the members of the Wabash community were transformed into digital wall coverings by our experiential graphics team. These murals surround the space, working with the design to provide an environment that truly embraces the foundation and traditions of Wabash College.

DePauw University desired a new welcoming location for their Alumni building.  Working closely with the university, our team was challenged with the adaptive re-use of a Georgian building formerly home to multiple Greek organizations.  The existing structure had been built in the 1920’s and had subsequent additions all falling into a modest state of disrepair.  Retaining the original footprint of the home was important to the program, therefore, a new addition was planned and others not sympathetic to the style were deleted.

Various functions were required of the new facility.  The design team executed thoughtfully designed floor plans for the multi-level building to better utilize the existing real estate in conjunction with the addition all while meeting accessibility standards.  Careful attention was given to the exterior of the adjoining extensions to appear cohesive with the original stately architecture.

The interior design and associated furnishings were updated to a more contemporary clean aesthetic while working in concert with the more traditional classical styling of the building.

In partnership with Ratio Architects, Rowland Design provided interior finish and furniture design for the phased renovation of the Butler University’s historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.  The essential goal of the project was to provide student athletes, staff and guests with modern amenities while maintaining the appeal of the existing period building.

Aesthetics for an important space named the Wildman Room were inspired by a 1928 yearbook, The Drift, which was the year the Fieldhouse was completed.  Notable features of the space include rich wood paneling, an Art-Deco bar along with a hand painted 1920’s style mural depicting life and times at the university.  A host of additional spaces throughout the building were also reconfigured and designed.
