A 1965 European Style cottage located in the unique Williams Creek neighborhood had suffered years of neglect and at one point, the possibility of a complete tear down was discussed. Insert new high‐profile art patrons paired with an uninhibited seasoned designer and the idyllic house is once again a storybook cottage and a welcomed rebirth to surrounding neighbors.

Perfectly suited to the clients, the formal interior layout provides the necessary walls for displaying the well curated art collection. Thoughtful  attention  was given to every detail of this renovation. Finishes, custom furniture and casework were balanced to compliment both the art and the bones of the original house

A bold design move to paint a library space teal was presented to the couple. First met with hesitation but fully trusting their interior designer, the finished space ensued a wow-factor of sophistication the modern couple loves.

This lake house had originally been two separate structures that are now joined, an original cottage and an adjacent out building once connected by a porch. The new remodel has married the two buildings with the addition of a central living room. The cottage volume contains the kitchen, dining spaces and entry on the first level. On the second-floor lives bedrooms with porch access, individual bathrooms and a casual family room.

The former out building houses the master bedroom with an ensuite bath featuring a bathing tub with direct views to Lake Michigan. A soaring fireplace flanked by floor to ceiling window walls is the anchoring feature of the new living room. A covered porch directly from the living room offers a second fireplace and provides a protected respite.

All interior finishes, furnishings and fabrics echo a peaceful ‘Zen’ making the project a tranquil haven to be enjoyed all year.

This grand house was brought to fruition by a decade of planning, collecting, designing and building. The design was influenced by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s neoclassical estate in Paris. Much of the home’s design focus was based on the proper display of the owner’s vast antique collection. Careful collaboration was considered when finding a home to accommodate each piece. When the project completed every displayed painting, treasured antique and heirloom seamlessly found its place within the space it inspired.

Design highlights include clean neutral main level walls adorned with white moldings which are punctuated with soft hues of lavender, teal, gold and champagne. Custom pattern rugs, floor to ceiling draperies and hand painted wallpapers reinforce the specific style of the house. Distinct seating arrangements throughout the residence allow areas for reading, relaxing and conversation. Accessories and furnishings were thoughtfully curated to blend harmoniously and provide a timeless aesthetic to the design.

ON THE BOARDS

The Lambda Iota Chapter of Purdue University’s Phi Gamma Delta sorority engaged Rowland Design to explore various design options to meet the expanding needs of the chapter. Our design team was able to capture and prioritize the chapter house program by generating a design survey distributed to existing collegiate members, chapter alumni and house corporation board members. Employing the approved program scope and input from a design charrette, a schematic rendering of the proposed addition was produced.

The renovation of the historic building will include the reconfiguration of the existing floors and addition. Community toilet and shower rooms will also receive a much-needed refresh. A comprehensive interior and exterior facelift will benefit future student living and learning.

The historic English Tudor revival home of Sigma Delta Tau on the University of Illinois campus boasted traditional character and original sorority house details. Leaded glass windows with sorority crests, a stately formal fireplace and period 1930s wood work throughout are unique features remaining intact and are absent within most chapter houses. With adjacent campus real estate at a premium, it was important for the house to maximize its existing assets.

Rowland Design worked with the National Gamma Phi Beta Housing Corporation to undergo an extensive renovation to their original chapter house at the University of Michigan.  As the Greek organization’s Beta Chapter, the recolonization of the sorority at the university was paramount.

The client’s desire was to create an impactful campus presence which led to the reconfiguring and upgrading of the building’s exterior.  A correctly proportioned and detailed Greek Revival façade and associated front porch, often recognized with Greek organizations, were added to the existing house.

Interior spaces were also reorganized for more efficient use and circulation.  Fresh finishes and furniture offered the house a brand-new look and feel.  The Gamma Phi Beta brand and colors were thoughtfully integrated throughout.  Necessary life safety improvements and accessibility concerns were addressed during the renovation.
