The Lambda Iota Chapter of Purdue University’s Phi Gamma Delta sorority engaged Rowland Design to explore various design options to meet the expanding needs of the chapter. Our design team was able to capture and prioritize the chapter house program by generating a design survey distributed to existing collegiate members, chapter alumni and house corporation board members. Employing the approved program scope and input from a design charrette, a schematic rendering of the proposed addition was produced.
The renovation of the historic building will include the reconfiguration of the existing floors and addition. Community toilet and shower rooms will also receive a much-needed refresh. A comprehensive interior and exterior facelift will benefit future student living and learning.

The historic English Tudor revival home of Sigma Delta Tau on the University of Illinois campus boasted traditional character and original sorority house details. Leaded glass windows with sorority crests, a stately formal fireplace and period 1930s wood work throughout are unique features remaining intact and are absent within most chapter houses. With adjacent campus real estate at a premium, it was important for the house to maximize its existing assets.

Rowland Design worked with the National Gamma Phi Beta Housing Corporation to undergo an extensive renovation to their original chapter house at the University of Michigan. As the Greek organization’s Beta Chapter, the recolonization of the sorority at the university was paramount.
The client’s desire was to create an impactful campus presence which led to the reconfiguring and upgrading of the building’s exterior. A correctly proportioned and detailed Greek Revival façade and associated front porch, often recognized with Greek organizations, were added to the existing house.
Interior spaces were also reorganized for more efficient use and circulation. Fresh finishes and furniture offered the house a brand-new look and feel. The Gamma Phi Beta brand and colors were thoughtfully integrated throughout. Necessary life safety improvements and accessibility concerns were addressed during the renovation.

Our designers creatively refreshed a variety of existing spaces for the Alpha Chi Omega sorority house at Indiana University. As first impressions count, a new entry was designed radiating with elegance and timeless style. New marble floors, wood moldings and symmetrical mirrored alcoves added to the energy. The existing enclosed staircase was opened and enhanced with iron railings. Improved energy efficient lighting in conjunction with a feature chandelier further reinforced the aesthetic of the space.
The television room was reconfigured to offer a more functional informal lounge for study and social interactions. A collection of flexible seating, including private nooks, were designed to support sisterhood activities and study sessions.
Particular attention was given to the Alpha Chi Omega brand throughout the project. A warm, wheat colored palette was incorporated to compliment the sorority’s signature colors of scarlet and olive green.
Custom embroidered lyre emblems were designed into the fabric of study chair backs. Custom trophy cases were fabricated to showcase the chapter’s achievements.

Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity worked closely with Rowland Design to renovate their existing Wabash College chapter house with the primary goal of updating and opening up the interior. Carefully selected interior walls were removed from the formal living and entry spaces to provide interactivity between brothers. A neutral base color palette punctuated with bold hues of eggplant and rust contribute to the living room’s sophisticated but comfortable aesthetic.
The Fraternity’s historic photos and relics found a permanent place on new casework and built-in shelving. The project was successfully completed over a summer season in time for the fall semester move in.

The Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Indiana University desired updated spaces for the women living in the chapter house to study and socialize. The spaces were to be relaxed and comfortable while reflecting the unique character of the sorority and its historic house. Understanding their vision, Rowland Design re-imagined the main entry, formal living room and library spaces to meet the project objective.
The heavy wood paneled entry was transformed into a warm and inviting sitting area with a sophisticated feel that also proudly displays photography of the current chapter members. The sorority’s brand was emphasized by implementing chapter colors into the formal living room’s finishes and furniture. A more transitional feel was necessary for the library space which features artwork and framed pictures displaying the sister’s history and academic achievements.

Renovating Butler University’s Alpha Phi house involved creatively reconfiguring the existing plan to offer greater function and effective use of space. Existing formal and informal living were reassigned moving formal areas forward and casual ‘hang out’ spaces towards the back of the house. The second-floor media room was refreshed allowing a more functional lounge. A custom banquette was created for the informal study and custom cubbies were fabricated for the new mail area.
A newly curated color scheme of soft warm hues was combined with preppy blues to enliven the home and reflect the energy of the women who live there.

The Spanish Colonial revival, often seen in Southern California architecture, radiates throughout the redesign of the existing Alpha Gamma Delta chapter house at the University of Southern California’s campus. Ornate details and stonework help define the entry and convey the period style design. The first floor of the existing house was reconfigured to accommodate the newly colonized organization’s needs for social gathering and community activities. Both the spirit of the sorority and university are celebrated via color and finish selections.
