IIDA ’s 2007 “IDEA” Award Winner for Corporate / Commercial spaces, this pharmaceutical company’s new headquarters lobby and ‘Heritage Hall’ exhibit was a collaborative effort with HOK,  facilitated by Rowland Design.

The design team was asked to create a stimulating space that tells the company’s 130 year commitment to pharmaceuticals and life sciences, and that communicates a responsible allocation of resources to its employees and visitors. Working within the existing architecture, the design team created a sequence of visual experiences that supports it’s story and history. Overhead light coves and elegant columns architecturally define the various spaces in the lobby and exhibit. Terrazzo floor patterns support story-telling through their “quoting” of the historic language of science, and hexagonal mosaic carpet patterns make reference to structures found in scientific chemistry.

Location: Wabash College | Crawfordsville, IN

Size: 700 square feet

Rowland Design converted a little-used formal lounge at the heart of Wabash’s campus into a restaurant and pub that provides an improved gathering space available to all students and faculty to foster community interaction.

The intent for this renovation was to use a minimal budget for maximum impact. Wall-to-wall carpeting was removed to expose the original hardwood floor which was lightly refinished. The ceiling was dropped to allow new lighting, wifi and ceiling fans, and was surfaced with prefinished wood flooring. A bar, complete with a solid wood top, was created at one end of the space and surrounded by handmade walnut stools created by a faculty member. A variety of seating/study options were created inside the space with elevated booths, a community table, lounge area and 4-top tables.

Historic photos and powerful quotes that are important to the members of the Wabash community were transformed into digital wall coverings by our experiential graphics team. These murals surround the space, working with the design to provide an environment that truly embraces the foundation and traditions of Wabash College.
