Carmel Clay Library West Branch
Location: Carmel, IN
Size: 6,000 square feet
When the Carmel Clay Library set out to expand their services to Carmel’s growing west side residents, Rowland Design was selected to design their new west branch. Located within an existing storefront in a busy neighborhood, the new branch library was planned in a space that was originally conceived by Rowland Design as a farmstand grocery. The existing footprint was small in size and not able to accommodate the large branch library program, which drove the need for two mezzanine additions to serve as reading rooms, study spaces and meeting areas. The existing outdoor patio was enclosed to extend the library and provide space for special programs. An addition was also completed to the exterior of the building for a book depository.
Carmel Clay Library’s desire was for the library to be a warm and welcoming setting; comfortable for all ages. Children and teen areas were designed into the footprint. A variety of flexible seating spaces equipped with power to accommodate users’ technology needs, and flexible shelving that is movable allowing for multiple arrangements was provided.
